Marija Gimbutas’ 100th birthday, January 23, 2021, is recognized by UNESCO as a significant anniversary supported by the national UNESCO committees of Latvia and Germany, and by Pacifica Graduate Institute in the USA.
UNESCO is honoring Marija Gimbutas as one of the eminent personalities who have “helped shape the civilization we share by contributing to the mutual enrichment of cultures for universal understanding and peace.”
Marija Gimbutas’ Centennial Year will be celebrated throughout 2021 featuring numerous international events, including:
- An Online Symposium July 16, 17, 18, 2021 sponsored by the Association of the Study of Women and Mythology (ASWM) in cooperation with the Institute of Archaeomythology (IAM). For information and to register, click here. To see the online program, click here.
- A year-long exhibition sponsored by the Opus Archives and Research Center on the campus of Pacifica Graduate Institute near Santa Barbara, CA, features selected material from Gimbutas’ archives preserved at Opus. For more information, click here.

- New Publications: A series of IAM publications including special issues of the Journal of Archaeomythology, and a Centennial Anthology to conclude these and other Centennial activities.
- Centennial events in Italy: Italian women researchers are celebrating Marija Gimbutas’ Centennial by posting their collection of articles and videos with a dynamic map of ancient ritual sites in Italy. To see their work, click here.
- Events in Lithuania: 2021 has been proclaimed as the Centennial Year of Marija Birutė Alseikaitė-Gimbutienė by the the Cultural Committee of Lithuania’s Parliament, with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and the Ministry of Education, Scientific Research and Sports. The centennial program in Lithuania features exhibits, academic conferences, and competitions for school children and teachers. These will include:
- “Goddesses and Warriors” – Marija Gimbutas’ 100th Birthday: An international exhibit of archaeological discoveries at the National Museum in Vilnius, opens September 1, 2021.
- “Marija Gimbutas – Researcher of the Neolithic and Bronze Ages”: Exhibition and exhibit at Vytautas Magnus Museum of War in Kaunas.
- Professor Jonas Puzinas’ 11th International Research Conference at Vilnius University will be dedicated to Marija Gimbutas. Conferences and seminars will include, “Ethnology and Reflections of Mythology in Educational Spheres”; a drawing competition for Lithuania’s schoolchildren, “Baltic Mythology – Lithuania’s Ancient Goddesses and Gods”; a ceramic arts competition (for students and teachers), “Ancient Symbolism in Lithuanian Folk Art”; and a camp for young adventurers: Baltic Live History.
